The reason for the closer is to stop use that may cause soil to wash into the stream.
I meet with JDSF and Caspar Watershed Staff earlier this year to look at the Moguls Trail. They do not like this trail because it also may cause soil to wash into the water. This area has an ongoing study to monitoring water quality and any excess soil in the water will mess up their data. At that time the Watershed Staff did not think Forbidden was a problem. Motorcycles started using the trail so probably the extra heavy use changed their minds.
At this time I think it is unlikely these trails will be reopened. I will try to get a new trail approved downstream of the study area so there will be a loop using the Caspar Crossing Trail as one leg.
Recently, a group of CX racers came for a weekend of riding and relaxing. They were not prepared to discover a hidden paradise for mountain biking. These are a few of the comments:

Thank you!!! I can honestly say that Saturday was my best day on a mountain bike ever in California. Those trails were so much fun!! And you are so lucky to have them in your backyard. I'm really grateful that you guys were so patient with us! I'm totally humbled and inspired and will definitely be back up!
Thanks again for being such an awesome host!

MW

Thanks and big hugs to you and your crew! What a splendid weekend! I am already scheming my return trip!

A few of the highlights for me:

The amazing a beautiful trails
The care and consideration shown to all our riders, you made us feel safe and confident
Our special mushroom gathering mission (what a treat!)
The nearly pre-dawn fire starters after a rain-soaked night, wow!

That is only the beginning. It was truly a weekend to be savored!

Thank you again, from me and my crew. I know everyone was equally ecstatic about our adventure!!!

See you again, very soon I hope!

Sincerely,

SM

This is the girl with the green, steel, rigid 29er. I just wanted to personally thank you for your hospitality and all the work and love you have put in to building those amazing trails. It was definitely a spectacular weekend and I cannot stop talking about it. I, for one, will be returning for the fat tire festival if not before.

As a coincidental matter of fact last year I met a couple from Wisconsin when I was having a post ride beer at Murphy and Matthias' establishment in Marin (www.gestalthausfairfax.com). We got to talking and they were mtn bike enthusiasts looking to rent decent bikes and go on a fun ride. I lent the woman mine and they actually brought it back unscathed and with pretty pictures. So the coincidence comes that I just received an email from them about their return trip to the Bay Area this spring and they want to go up to Mendocino. Of course I emphatically encouraged this. Would you mind if I give them your email as a contact? I am sure they would love to see your amazing trails as well.

Thanks again,

C

Wanted to let you know what a fantastic time my team had in Mendocino.

The riding was outstanding, the guides were great and the hospitality puts other parts of the country to shame.

We'll be back for sure.

Thank you all again for everything.

Cheers!

MM

OMG -- that ride was so FUN!!!
Seeing that video makes me want to be in Mendocino RIGHT NOW!!
:)

You guys took us on the best loop!! I loved it all.

Thanks again!!
and see you again soon!!!

A

yes thank you!! that was awesome!!! I'm missing mendocino too!! Hopefully the rain will stop so we can go up and ride again soon! :-)

MW
Roohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12335307449053332087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21769424.post-12289755295784650692011-01-31T16:32:00.000-08:002011-08-13T16:51:22.985-07:00Mendocino Coast Fat Tire Festival
Access to trails along the coast is very much desired by local and visiting cyclists. Riding a bicycle is an enjoyable and healthy way to see the coast and brings many visitors to our area. Mountain bikes do not need a "class one bike path" to ride on. Cyclists can walk stairs, tight corners, and other obstacles so in reality no trail is unusable to them. The idea bicycles are more damaging to "sensitive natural resources" then hikers has not been backed up by scientific studies. "Access to trailheads and parking" is less important to cyclists then it is to hikers since riding to the trail is a possibility. Allowing bicycles on new trails should be open to review. "Land management agency policies" have been changed to allow cyclists in the past and should not be used to automatically exclude them. Bicycle riders have contributed their time and money to acquire right of ways and build trails on the coast but have not been included in forming policies for trails. Mendocino Coast Cyclists would like to help insure bicycling is included on the California Coastal Trail in Mendocino County.

Sincerely,

Chris Clutton

Past president Mendocino Coast Cyclists

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
Chris Cluttonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06315058660772042207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21769424.post-84901533606610583942010-01-28T17:18:00.000-08:002010-02-26T11:50:47.965-08:00Mendocino Coast Regional Park <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; After meeting and setting up lights our group left F.B.Cyclery and headed to the parade start on Stewart St. We showed up at around 15 min before start time and got to be the last entries. This meant we could push back the police escort and really have some fun! A whole lot of wrong way riding was going on. Toward the end on Franklin St we started weaving up through and checking out the other entrants. Some put a lot of effort into the show! We then headed over to Rose and Stan's for a great pot luck dinner and a few eggnogs. A good time was had by all!
Get out and Ride!

I met with JDSF and Caspar Creek Watershed Study staff 11/5/09 at the Recreational Task Force meeting. Everyone apologized for not letting us know before closing the trail. The reason for the closure is to immediately stop use that is contributing to soil washing into streams in the Caspar Watershed Study area. This study monitors water quality before and after timber harvest work. It is important for this study's accuracy to keep erosion not related to harvesting to a minimum. I asked to be given an opportunity to try and reopen the trail by addressing the erosion problems. In my opinion this would be the best long-term solution. Staff was open to this. I will set up a field meeting to look at the problems with staff and ask that the public be invited as well.
